A few definitions of "snipe"

1. noun Any of various long-billed shore birds of the genus Gallinago or Capella, related to the woodcocks and sandpipers, especially the common, widely distributed species G. gallinago or C. gallinago

2. verb 1. To shoot at individuals from a concealed place. 2. To make malicious, underhand remarks or attacks.

3. myth   Older kids, often at summer camp, will gather an excited group of younger kids, late at night, and lead them on a “snipe hunt.”   Clutching  pillow cases, the young ones follow the bigger kids out into the woods , periodically  yelling “snipe!” in the hopes of attracting the elusive prey. The older kids  then abandon their naive comrades in the woods . The dupes  must  then try to find their way back into camp in the dark, well past curfew, without waking the adults, while dwelling on their own stupidity and dreading the ridicule they will inevitably face in the morning. The snipe hunt is a sacred rite of passage endured by all kids dumb enough to fall for the initial proposition.
